"In 1960 State Ballet was only a dream, today it is a reality."

That statement appeared in The State Ballet of Rhode Island's forward in my tenth anniversary program book back in 1970. It captured the sense of excitement and accomplishment I felt then, and still has significant meaning this year as we celebrate our 48th performing season. Few civic ballet companies are able to mark such milestones, and I consider myself fortunate to be doing just that this year. Our season begins with The State Ballet's holiday tradition, Coppelia, the enchanting love story of the doll with the enamel eyes. Join me this spring as The State Ballet and I bring to the stage such repertoire favorites like Swan Lake Divertissement, and Graduation Ball. I am also proud to announce the arrival of a new one-act ballet, Gansel and Hetal, a world premiere based on the story of "Hansel and Gretal".

Performing on stage is the cherished opportunity where a dancer can present their talent to an audience. That is also why you will often find The State Ballet of Rhode Island at performance venues and community events across the state throughout the season. In these forums, we are able to reach new audience members who I hope will feel the spirit and fall in love with classical ballet. Yet, it is on our stage where these talented young women and men get their personal sense of accomplishment. It is this love of the art of classical ballet that can transcend each audience member and make you come back, season after season.

As the Artistic Director of The State Ballet of Rhode Island, it inspires me to forge ahead with my mission to create, present, and preserve classical ballet throughout Rhode Island. We are now just three years away from our half century anniversary! Personally, I thank each and every one of you for your continued support of the Company.

With my best wishes and many thanks,

Herci Marsden
